A window that drops needs attention

A vertically sliding window should not need a makeshift prop to stay open. If the sash drops, feels much heavier than before or rises crookedly, stop relying on it to hold its position. Keep hands clear of the closing path and arrange a repair.

These symptoms often involve the balance system, although damaged hardware, a disconnected component or frame resistance can also affect movement. Horizontal sliding windows and crank-operated casement windows use different operating parts, so describing the window style is a useful starting point.

What window balances do

Balances counter the weight of a moving sash in many single-hung and double-hung windows. Designs vary by manufacturer and model. The correct replacement depends on the system, attachment and supported sash weight, rather than length alone.

A spring or balance problem can make one side behave differently from the other. A sash that tilts or catches should not be forced repeatedly. Manufacturer guidance for hung windows warns that an unsupported sash or disengaged balance can allow the sash to fall.

Balance repair versus replacing the whole window

When the frame, sash and glass remain usable and compatible parts are available, replacing failed balances or related hardware can restore operation without a complete window replacement. The service should also check how the sash travels, closes and locks after the repair.

Glass breakage, significant frame deterioration or unavailable components can change the decision. A complete replacement is a separate project, with product selection and installation requirements. Ask for an explanation of which component has failed and what a hardware repair would solve before comparing it with an installation proposal.

Do not assume an impact window requires a full replacement just because it feels heavy. Regular and impact windows can both need operating hardware service. The balance must be suitable for the actual product and sash, including its weight.

Prepare for a window repair visit

Note whether one window or several have the problem, whether the sash falls from any height, and whether the lock still lines up. Read manufacturer labels only when accessible without moving an unstable sash. Do not release springs, remove balance components or lift out a heavy sash to identify a part.

Provide your city and any condo access requirements when calling. Clear space around the window if it is safe to do so, and keep the affected opening out of normal use. A phone description helps plan the visit, while final part matching depends on the window’s actual components.
