Start with the symptom

What is your window doing?

What this can point to

Won’t stay open

A sash that won’t hold its position usually means the balance can no longer support its weight.

Window balance / spring replacement

What is a window balance?

Window balances are mechanisms that help counterbalance the weight of an operable window sash, allowing the sash to move and stay in position. When a balance becomes worn or damaged, the window may:

  • Feel heavy
  • Be difficult to lift
  • Slide back down
  • Refuse to stay open

Window styles use different balance systems, so we identify yours before recommending parts.

Diagram: the balance system in the side jambs supports the sash. When it wears out, the sash may slide shut or refuse to stay open.

Regular window balances

We evaluate the window and replace compatible balance components so the sash lifts easily and holds its position. Balances can be under spring tension, so we don’t recommend removing them yourself.

Impact window balances

Impact windows can develop the same balance and operating-hardware problems. We use replacement components matched to the window design.

Impact sliding doors

Impact sliding glass door installation

A new impact-rated sliding glass door is a complete door assembly — not just new rollers or new glass. Proper fit, system compatibility, and correct installation all matter.

If your existing sliding door just needs to move better, sliding glass door repair may be enough.

FAQ

Window repair & installation questions

Why won’t my window stay open?

Most often the balance — the mechanism that counterbalances the sash — is worn or has failed, so it can no longer hold the sash in position.

Can window balances be replaced?

Yes. We evaluate the window and replace compatible balance components. We don’t recommend DIY spring removal; balances can be under tension.

Can you repair balances on impact windows?

Yes. Impact-rated operable windows can develop balance and hardware problems too. Repair uses components appropriate to the window design.

Do I need a full new window?

Not necessarily. If only the balance is worn, or only the glass is broken, the existing window may be repaired. A new unit makes sense when the frame or assembly is damaged, or when you want to upgrade.

When can just the glass be replaced?

When the frame and operating parts are sound and only the glazing is damaged. See broken glass replacement.

Do you install new impact windows?

Yes. We install new impact-resistant windows.

Do you install impact sliding doors?

Yes. We install complete impact-rated sliding glass door assemblies.

Do you install impact entry doors?

Yes. We install new impact-rated exterior entry doors.

Do replacements require permits?

Many window and door replacements in South Florida require permits, and requirements vary by jurisdiction and project. We review what applies to your property during the estimate.
