Keep people away from the damaged opening
Shattered sliding door glass changes a familiar doorway into an unsafe area. Keep children, pets and foot traffic away, and stop using the door. Avoid pushing on cracked glass or attempting to remove a heavy panel. Call for glass service and explain whether the opening is exposed.
Tell the company whether the break involves a sliding door, window or storefront. In a condo, notify building management about access requirements and the damaged opening. For an Aventura balcony door, explain the floor and access arrangements so the visit can be planned around the property.
Regular and impact doors need the right replacement glass
A regular sliding door and an impact door may look similar while using different glazing. Impact products use a tested assembly and commonly include laminated glass. The glass specification, frame and installation belong together; choosing by thickness or appearance alone is not enough.
Laminated glass includes an interlayer that helps retain broken pieces. Glass remaining in the frame does not make a damaged opening ready for continued use. PGT’s glass guidance distinguishes laminated, tempered and other glass configurations; replacement should be matched to the identified product.
Have the manufacturer, model or label information available if it can be read safely. The replacement order may need dimensions, glass makeup, tint, coatings and other product details. A glass-only replacement can be possible when the door frame and glazing system are serviceable; damaged framing can change the repair scope.
Mobile standard glass cutting has limits
Universal offers mobile cutting of standard glass when it is suitable for the opening. That does not mean every broken window or sliding door can receive glass cut from a sheet on the truck. The opening’s required glass type determines the approach.
Tempered and specialty impact glazing generally require an appropriate replacement order. Storefront openings can also involve safety glass, door hardware and large panels with different handling needs. Describe the opening and let the service provider identify the replacement rather than requesting ordinary glass as a substitute.
Temporary board-up while replacement glass is ordered
When specialty glass is not ready, temporary board-up can help close an exposed opening until replacement is available. The method depends on the frame, opening size and access. Ask how the opening will be secured and what the next step will be once measurements and glass details are confirmed.
Board-up is temporary protection, not replacement glazing or a claim of impact-rated storm protection. Keep the affected area out of normal use and coordinate any building access needed for the return visit. Ask about current availability when calling; arrival and glass lead times depend on the job.
Information to have ready for a free estimate
Explain your city, the type of opening, whether the glass is missing or cracked in place, and any manufacturer information you already have. Mention whether the damage affects one pane, multiple panels, the frame or the door’s operation. Do not handle broken glass just to obtain a measurement.
